"Another reason it's so hard to find good green cosmetics is chemistry. 'It's easier to make a cream [or a lotion] out of 100 percent natural or organic ingredients than it is to make color cosmetics," explains Kristin Adams, president of Afterglow Cosmetics, a California-based company that was one of the first signers of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. Adams uses almost exclusively natural and certified organic ingredients in all of her makeup. 'When you're trying to create a natural product with pigments and minerals, you find that many of the necessary ingredients contain something questionable.' As a result, there are currently fewer options on the market for safe and healthy makeup than there are for many other personal-care products. Companies like Afterglow Cosmetics are working hard, but it's just taking longer to develop the cleanest technology."
