Easy Option for Recycling Afterglow Containers!

20110525_wfrecycle1
Did you know you can recycle your empty Afterglow powder containers and lipstick tubes? Well you can!

We uses #5 plastic in our loose powder and lipstick containers, which can now be recycled at participating Whole Foods as part of their Gimme5 Recycling Program. Find out today if your local Whole Foods is participating and start recycling! Click here for locations.

Naturally you’re wondering what the Gimme5 program is and how your containers will make a difference. Well, here’s how it works. Once you drop your Afterglow containers off at Whole Foods, they send the plastic to Preserve, an organization which makes recycled household products including toothbrushes, razors, tableware and kitchen products. Click here for more information on Preserve.

Happy recycling beauties!

H&M Adopts Sustainability

Organic clothing has recently reached a new level of style with H&M’s new Conscious Collection, constructed of environmentally adapted and green materials.

It seems sustainability has been a long-term goal with H&M and with the use of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and Tencel, they have made strides past the normal standards of the natural lifestyle.

Unfamiliar with Tencel? It’s a fairly new brand of biodegradable fabric made of wood pulp cellulose that feels very similar to rayon.

The pieces in this new line include stylish and comfy clothes ranging from tiered dresses to Grecian-style gowns in the natural and purity-implying shade of white. If the Conscious Collection has its way we’ll breeze through summer in long flowing skirts or cute cut-off shorts.

Luckily, this clothing incentive to the natural lifestyle isn’t just geared towards weekend living and specialty events. It extends throughout the week with neatly tailored white blazers and trousers .....

Sustainable Fashion in North Carolina

For the past three years Raleigh has turned a spotlight on sustainable fashion, bringing eco-friendly designers together for a weekend of sustainable events commencing with the signature Redress Raleigh Fashion Show.

Since this sustainable event aims at exhibiting stylish clothing collections by designers who use recycled and remanufactured materials the Afterglow Team was thrilled to be involved. When asked to share artistic looks, we sprang at the opportunity to showcase our products on the runway because of our strong dedication to bridge the gap between nature, sustainability and fashion.

Think you know sustainable fashion? Think again! Green doesn’t mean giving up high fashion. Watch the Redress Raleigh video recap and to marvel at the sustainable couture.

Four Tips for Fab Summer Makeup

What can you sometimes get when you mix summer’s heat and makeup? A runny and unflattering mess!

When the summer sun starts to sizzle our looks may start to fizzle. So what can you do? Luckily there are summer makeup products available to help you look your best, even when that heat starts bearing down.

Heat Tip #1: Stay away from liquid foundations!
The sun may be your friend, but it’s not your liquid foundation’s friend. Instead try a light powder foundation. Along with usually having an SPF, a powder foundation clings to your skin when the temperature swells.

Heat Tip #2: Subtle for summer
For natural and gorgeous summer makeup, try light and neutral shades in eye shadowlipstick and blush. Light pinks, tans, and corals will subtly highlight all your best features

Heat Tip #3: Keep lips moisturized
The summer sun and heat can do a number on your lips. It’s important to keep your lips moisturized and protected from the elements.

Heat Tip #4: Appl.....

Congratulations to our Earth Day Evolution winner!

Congratulations to Bebe, the winner of Afterglow Cosmetics’ Earth Day Evolution Contest! Read Bebe’s personal Evolution below.

I bring my own tea and water from home, and have started using baking soda for cleaning pots, pans, and the sinks.

I also use baking soda as a facial scrub and it really helps to shrink and tighten my pores. I’m in my early fifties, and my skin hasn’t looked this good since the 4th grade!

The Earth Day Evolution Winner was selected at random. The Afterglow Team would like to thank all our Earth-conscious fans for sharing their Earth Day Evolutions with us.

The Devil You Know…

When I speak with people about my cosmetic line for the first time I am quick to point out exactly what makes Afterglow Cosmetics so unique. I generally talk about how we specifically formulate all our products to be as natural as possible, with an emphasis on the inclusion of certified organic botanicals. You’d think this conversation would be an innocuous, lighthearted chat but it can quickly turn controversial.

If my new friend is looking for a debate they usually respond with a one-two punch to challenge me by saying, ‘Well, just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s better. There are lots of things that are ‘natural’ and are really bad for you like cyanide, arsenic, deadly mushrooms, uranium, poison ivy. . .’ I enthusiastically respond in agreement and agree natural is definitely not inherently safer.

Yes, the word ‘natural’ has become quite an explosive conversation starter in the US, thanks to a lack of a definition for the label ‘natural.’ Th.....

Happy Earth Week, Beauties!

If you’re anything like us, as April 22nd rolls around you start making a mental list of all the practices you plan on putting in place during your day, aimed at helping the Earth.

Sadly, like New Year’s resolution, some of us tend to reach too high with grand visions of creating a more sustainable home, shopping only organic and reducing our waste. And what usually happens? These resolutions fall by the wayside.

Why? Because, it can be too much!

The problem with greening our entire life is there can be too many options and tasks for an overnight transformation. We shouldn’t feel  guilty because we weren’t able to stick to our laundry list of resolutions.

So this Earth Day, break the pattern. Pick one small area to focus on that’s an attainable goal you can commit to and stick with it. The sum total of these simple and attainable resolutions will outdo the effect the forgotten resolutions have yielded in years past.

Remember, it’s not a resolution, it.....
