Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Please note that some of the links below may randomly be affiliates. Enjoy!

1. Addressing Dry Lips from the Inside – I’ll be the first to admit that a lip balm will not cure your chronic dry lips. I say this even though we make an amazing luxury organic lip balm. Regardless of the brand, lip balm simply soothes the superficial manifestation of your dry lips… but it doesn’t cure it. I’ve noticed that since I went on my hormone shifting diet guided by the amazing online program, Cooking for Balance by Magdalena Wszelaki, all my dry issues have disappeared. I attribute this to eating more healthy fats and healing my gut which has allowed me to fully absorb more nutrients.

2. Podcast That’s Inspiring Me – Dear Sugar: How Do I Find The Courage To Be My Own Guide?

3. Falling in Love with Hemp – If you haven’t started using hemp hearts (aka hemp seeds) and hemp milk as an upgraded, healthy alternative to dairy and nut milk, they are worth trying. Gluten-free, sugar-free and nut-free, hemp hearts and hemp milk are mild in flavor and their benefits exceed the benefits of other proteins. In fact, hemp’s a complete protein, and provides more digestible protein than eggs, cheese and meat. They are insanely nutritious and rich in Vitamin E, healthy fats and minerals. They’re also an excellent source of essential fatty acids including the perfect balance of Omega 3, 6 and GLA. I get my hemp milk from Whole Foods and my organic hemp hearts for my smoothies and salads here.

4. Quote I’m Integrating – “Do you want to meet the love of your life? Look in the mirror.” – Byron Katie

5. Radical thought I’m Having – It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.

6. Feeling the Love Every year we hold a Love Letters Contest asking you to write a love letter to your favorite Afterglow product for Valentine’s Day. The first 100 thoughtful entries automatically win a full size product. We choose ten love letters that kept us blushing to win $100 gift certificates. We love hearing your stories and seeing your creativity shine through. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!  We will be announcing the winners and their letters over the next few weeks. Here’s the first winner…

7. Love Letter Winner #1

Dear Shortcake (under eye concealer),

You are my love, my light for the darkness under my eyes. All those late nights up doing homework or sick from Celiac, you are right there to comfort my tired eyes. My eyes brighten as soon as you touch my skin with your silky presence. So soft, gentle and beautiful.

My days brighten when I know I can count on you, my shortcake, to put the light on the dark so my preschool students are not scared.

I can also count on you to be easy on my eyes and prevent me from getting sick. You are not like the other concealers, oh no, you don’t hide your ingredients and you are faithful all day helping me look my best. Other concealers boast of natural ingredients but you don’t have to boast. The proof is immediate, right when you are under my eye.

I know being gluten free, like me, we will always be great together in any kind of weather. I tell my gluten free group about you because I know they would love you like I do. I shout out to the world how much I love you because I want everyone else to know how lovely you are.

My shortcake, I can never do without you. One day without you would be miserable which is why I keep you close to my makeup bag. You will always be near me and I near you.

Shortcake, thank you for holding my hand through the darkness under my eye. Thank you for lighting up my life.

With much love,

Christina Griffin aka Your Valentine

Check out the love of which she writes here.

Kristin

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Please note that some of the links below may randomly be affiliates. Enjoy!

1. Don’t be Jealous – I don’t mean to brag but… I just picked up a generic version of the pricy EpiPen brand called Epinephrine for a mere $9.99 at CVS! I don’t even have insurance! Last year, the makers the epinephrine injectable that saves lives for those with severe allergies to food and insect stings jacked their Epipen price up to an unconscionable $600! Thankfully, the market responded. Just waltz into your nearest CVS and plunk down this coupon with your prescription and get your shiny new 2 Epinephrine pen pack for $9.99. Please forward this coupon to anyone you know that carries Epinephrine!

2. Awareness and Shifting the Vibe – I’ve become very sensitive to the way conversations turn, and how we frame our experiences as “bad” or “good”. Often when a situation is annoying or goes sour, the comment will be made, “It’s always something, isn’t it?!” which immediately skews the vibe negative with a heavy thud. In my mind (and sometimes out loud) I like to counteract that by musing, “That’s an interesting point of view.” and “But how good can it get!?!”

3. Quote I’m Integrating – “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” – Maya Angelou

4. Feeling Results – I’m a full two months into my hormone shifting diet guided by the amazing online program, Cooking for Balance by Magdalena Wszelaki. At this point, I have a whole laundry list of notable shifts that have happened in my body, but the biggest one is that my endometriosis pain, that plagued me every month, all month long, is gone! If you suffer from thyroid issues, Hashimoto’s, adrenal fatigue, PMS, infertility, peri-/menopause, PCOS, endometriosis, estrogen dominance, fibroids, breast lumps/cancer check out Magdalena’s free intro workshop here.

5. Getting Sweeter with Omica Organics Stevia There’s simply too much evidence about the insanely damaging effects of sugar on the body to ignore at this point. Unfortunately, the healthy defacto sugar sub, stevia, can have a bad/bitter aftertaste. What’s a sweet tooth to do? Try Omica Organics Stevia. Their processing is different, it’s cleaner and eliminates the aftertaste. I was so inspired after listening to the owner talk about their conscious manufacturing processes that I went out and bought some. I don’t regret it at all. Delish!  I’m using this flavor.

7. Natural Beauty Product I’m Loving I just uploaded our latest video which details the what, why and how to for our Organic Infused Calm Cover concealer.  This is the perfect redness cancelling product for acne and blemishes. Check it out and please don’t forget to like the video and subscribe to our channel!

Thanks for staying present!

Love & Light,

Kristin

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Please note that some of the links below may randomly be affiliates. Enjoy!

1. Finally Pressing Record – Check out my first video, How to Apply our Natural Concealer, all about applying our Perfecting Under Eye Concealer. Video hasn’t been “my thing” for many years but I know how many prefer video, so I’ve finally gotten out of my own way and my own head and pressed record.  Whew, it took a real push to get here but now I’m officially a YouTuber! Please like the video and subscribe to our YouTube channel. I’ll be adding a video a week!

2. Letting THIS Food Be My Medicine – It’s no secret that our diet, emotional state and lifestyle has the ability to turn on or off certain latent genes that could manifest disease. The study around this fenomena is called epigenetics. There’s a component of cruciferous vegetables called Sulforaphane, which is a potent dietary activator of genetic pathway that regulates over 200 genes including cancer, mortality, aging, brain and behavior and heart disease. Check out this exciting video, by Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Sulforaphane and Its Effects on Cancer, Mortality, Aging, Brain and Behavior, Heart Disease & More. Dr. Patrick will get you so insanely excited about broccoli sprouts by the end of this video, you’ll immediately want to start your own broccoli farm (or a mini one with sprouting). Pop on over to Spout People for your very own broccoli sprouting starter kit.

3. Quote I’m Integrating – “You are constantly shaping a mirror that reflects you.” – Bentinho Massaro

4. Radical Thought I’m Having – The most powerful change starts with a question.

5. Re-Imaging 2017 Subconsciously – In the book Biology of Belief, Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. cell biologist, epigenetic researcher, demonstrates how the expression of the mind is changed into chemistry. The picture that you have in your head is translated into neurochemistry that matches the picture of yourself you hold in your head. Being mindful of this perspective could be a real game changer for all of us! Release yourself from your subconscious program and watch Bruce Lipton’s illuminating video about how to approach your resolutions and goals.

6. Love Languages & Leggings – My love languages are Physical Touch and Gifts. I was so tickled to get these gorgeous Sea Wolf Designs, hand made, bamboo, Mystical Owl Print Leggings from my bestie! Check out their Etsy site for mystical, arty, hand made, earthy and totally unique athleisure.

7. Natural Beauty Product I’m LovingOne of our highest rated and most loved products, Organic Infused Perfecting Under Eye Concealer, just had to be my first video in my Afterglow tutorial series. I could go on and on about how amazing this little gem is but I’ll let my video speak for itself.

Thanks for staying present!

Love & Light,

Kristin

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. Celebrating the Small Wins – It’s very hard to be beautiful when you aren’t happy. Carrying an ongoing light of gratitude in your mind and heart is an important part of beauty. At the end of a year it seems we fall into a funk of what we didn’t do or accomplish, and struggle to remember all of those small wins that made our year great (yes it was!). Moving into 2017, I have committed myself to a “Jar of Awesomeness” practice. Watch this short video by one of my entrepreneurial crushes, Tim Ferriss, as he explains how this sweet practice could be the best thing you do for yourself this coming year.  (Along with a personal note, it would also be an inexpensive and thoughtful last minute xmas gift!)

2. Unconventional Giving Back – Every year I look back on all the amazing people in my life that have supported me on my journey and bathe in the knowing of how blessed I am. I love having the ability to pay it forward to so many people. The micro-loan organization Kiva allows me to give back in a small way to elevate people out of poverty and support their entrepreneurial dreams of a better life. Since I started with Kiva in 2010, I have made 98 micro-loans for as little as $25 to people in 34 countries. View the recipients of all 98 loans I’ve made here. You can get started on your philanthropic journey for just $25 here.

3. Quote I’m Integrating as I reflect on 2016 – “You can only run your own race.”

4. Radical Thought I’m Having – I am the sum of my intentions and choices.

5. Why We’re Taking Two Weeks Off – This is the second year that the Afterglow team will be taking two weeks off starting on Christmas. We’ll return January 9th, 2017. Sounds insane, doesn’t it? I wrote a blog post about why I believe this is one of the most sane business decisions I’ve made: Why We’re Taking Two Weeks Off. (And don’t worry! We’ll still be taking orders online and shipping while we’re out. Read the blog post to find out how.)

6. My Favorite New Year’s Video – As you move into the new year, set down your critiques and self-criticism about what did or didn’t happen to and for you in 2016… and slip into this gorgeous, inspiring TedTalk Nature. Beauty. Gratitude. by the incredible time-lapse photographer, Louie Schwartzberg.

7. My 3 Winter Skin Savers – Cold weather and dry skin has me reaching for these three amazingly hydrating skin care products; Exuberance Beauty’s Wild Blueberry Intensive Day & Night Cream, Evening Primrose Eye Contour Cream and Organic Infused Lip Soothers.

Thanks for staying present! Enjoy your holiday weekend and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Love & Light,

Kristin

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

2. Still Going Strong – I mentioned that I’m in the first half of a low-histamine diet on a quest to heal my gut and rebalance my hormones. I just found a new love in this delish vegan Matcha Latte. I make the recipe using my NutriBullet and this matcha tea.

3. The Greenest Way to Get Your Glam On  – I wish I had more opportunities to dress up in a gorgeous gown and go out. I often think that the reason salsa dancing is one of my hobbies is because it gives me an excuse to dress up. If you hate to shop for clothes during the holidays and always regret buying that fabulous dress you know you’ll only wear once, try Rent the Runway. I love this site because they have an amazing selection of beautiful dresses for every once-in-a-lifetime event. They send you two sizes and make it easy to send them back after your event. I’ve never been disappointed and am grateful not to have a ton of dresses clogging up my closet.

4. Quote I’m Integrating – “When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.” – Wayne Dyer

5. Holiday Awareness I’m Having – I try to keep Wayne Dyer’s above quote in my mind and heart as an awareness year ‘round, but I think it can be especially powerful when coping with the unique comments, criticisms and comparisons that come with the holidays and family. I’m wishing you all during this holiday the power to step into love and awareness, witnessing that abrasive family member’s comments as an unconscious billboard of who they are and what they are struggling with…. It’s not about you.

6. Gifting Afterglow – Love Afterglow and don’t know how to gift it? Try giving an Afterglow gift certificate. On December 20th our eGift Certificates are going on sale at 15% off.

7. Our Gloss Gets Some Love – Many years ago Afterglow was featured and highly recommended by Sophie Uliano in her NY Times Best Selling book Gorgeously Green. She launched the book for Earth Day on the Oprah show with her famous friend Julia Roberts… and very quickly we sold out of almost every single thing in our inventory.  It was crazy! We continue to be honored by Sophie’s praise. This month our Organic Infused Hydra Gloss received Gorgeously Green’s Beauty Awards Top Honor for the best gloss! Now part of our 50% off overstock sale until 12/29/16!

Thanks for staying present! Enjoy your weekend!

Love & Light,

Kristin

Why We’re Taking 2 Weeks Off…

Afterglow-December-BlogImage-2WeeksOff

Even though we are a makeup company, there are three subjects more important to us than makeup….

Happiness, health, and sustainability take the (gluten-free) cake at Afterglow…

because we know that there is no amount of makeup that can make you calm and glowing the way taking time to truly relax and reconnect with yourself does.

We talk lot about sustainability and the importance of selecting sustainable, organic ingredients and designing our business to reduce waste and run efficiently. Since I started Afterglow in 2004, I’ve witnessed the exciting business trend towards using sustainable ingredients and business practices to better the planet and reduce waste.

But there’s a serious disconnect…

We humans are left out of the sustainability conversation in American business.

America has been dubbed by many as the “no vacation nation”. In fact, according to The Center for Economic and Policy Research, American’s take less vacation time than any other country in the world. While most of Europe enjoys 30 days of vacation, Americans aren’t even taking the two weeks average. According Jack Dickey’s Time magazine (June 1, 2015) article entitled, “Save Our Vacation: What we must do to revive a cherished American institution”, Americans leave an average of 4.9 vacation days a year unused. I believe this is due to a work-a-holic culture and a fear of taking vacation due to job loss and advancement consequences.

Incredibly, the US is the only country that does not require employers to offer vacation time as The Center for Economic and Policy Research shows in their graph below.

paid vacation time

via The Center for Economic and Policy Research

Yikes! It’s no wonder that we as a nation feel burned-out!

So, we’ve decided to continue embodying Gandhi’s dream of being the change I wish to see in the world.

In this case, I wish to see a healthier, happier America where we have the time to truly enjoy the life we work so hard for. I want businesses to look at not only giving more time off, but encouraging employees to take time off to unplug, rejuvenate, relax and reflect.

There’s no better place to start with change than with that beauty in the mirror….

In the words of one of my virtual business mentors, Marie Forleo, who inspired me to initiate this two week team hiatus through her own team vacay announced here:

“If you’re always listening to the noise of the world, it’s impossible to hear the whispers of your soul.”

Is taking time to listen to the sweet whispers of your soul once a year too much to ask?

Nope!

Continuing our philosophy from last year, all Afterglow employees will be required to take two weeks off from December 25th to January 8th. We’re calling it our Winter Wellness Vacation.

Yes! I am so excited to see this vacation experiment work it’s magic on Team Afterglow!

We are thrilled to be able to take this time with family and friends knowing that we will return to start the new year happier, more relaxed, and ready to go!

How could we be authentic to our mission and our holistic lifestyle if we did anything less?

Never fear! Through the magic of the internet, you will still be able to place orders 24/7 via our website during our December 25th – January 8th Winter Wellness Vacation. During this period, your orders will also process and ship within our regular, speedy processing and shipping time frames. Check out our holiday and regular shipping schedule here.

If you still prefer to wait for an exchange, please note that all exchanges received December 25th through January 8th will be processed by January 23rd.

Kristin’s Saturday 7 – 3 Dec 16

Fall Saturday 7

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. Movie I’m Recommending – I don’t often open cry on planes but this movie made my flight on a recent trip to Sweden. I highly recommend ‘Captain Fantastic’… it’s not what you think. Rent the movie here.

2. Drinking the Queen of Mushrooms – I love getting my hot chocolate and an emotional fix in one sip with Mushroom Hot Cacao with Reishi from Four Sigma. Reishi, the 4,000 year old mushroom that’s often called “the queen of mushrooms”, is known for inducing calm and ensuring better sleep by naturally regulating the hormonal system and lowering cortisol levels. This delish drink is GF, low-GI and dairy-free.

3. Discovering Makeup Ingredients in Coffee Creamer – We use a non-nano, highly purified version of the mineral ingredient Titanium Dioxide as the base for our foundation to add the opacity, coverage and SPF protection. Do you know where else you can find this mineral? In your coffee creamer. It’s totally unnecessary but still used to boost the visual whiteness factor and thickness in creamer. It’s often included in even the most “natural” coconut and milk creamers in the grocery store. Skip the store bought creamers and try Sophie Uliano’s super natural Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer recipe here instead.

4. Quote I’m Integrating – The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage.” – Thucydides (471 BC – 400 BC)

5. Radical Thought I’m Having – You can always change your mind.

6. Holiday Awareness I’m Having – I started easing into a low-histamine diet a few months ago. I’ve eliminated quite a number of potential inflammatory culprits from my diet but have dragged my feet on alcohol and nightshades until now. I’m not a big drinker but I do love having a glass of wine now and then. Here’s an interesting perspective that has given me a new awareness about women and drinking that’s definitely worth a read.

7. Natural Beauty Hack I Love – Natural facial lotions and creams should be used within six months of opening. You might still be stuck with your lighter summer facial lotion well into fall or winter. It’s not a great idea to hang onto it until next summer because it will have expired. Instead, try magically transforming  the moisturizing power of your current summer lotion by mixing your lotion with a few drops of organic jojoba oil or organic sweet almond oil in the palm of your hand before applying.

Thanks for staying present! Enjoy your weekend!

Love & Light,

Kristin

Fall Saturday 7

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. Plotting My Thanksgiving Outfit – Stylish, comfortable and cozy are the three things I look for in a Thanksgiving day outfit. That’s why I’ll be wearing my Vegan Black Suede Leggings by Lysse. If you love leggings and like to dress them up, I highly recommend Lysee’s collection of grown-up, stylish leggings.

2. Volunteering – For years my family has spent part of the holidays volunteering at the local dog shelter.  If you have a desire to volunteer during your holidays and don’t know where to start, check out VolunteerMatch.org for a list of local volunteer opportunities.

3. Quote I’m integrating – “Enough is a feast.” – Buddhist proverb

4. On Mindful Eating – November marks a month that reminds us of all the ways our food traditions influence our lives, culture and our health. In addition to Thanksgiving, November’s also World Vegan Month and National Diabetes Month.

5. Radical Idea Worth Trying – At 109 years old, this Holocaust Survivor just might have unlocked the ultimate anti-aging secret… would you be willing to do this all the time for a long, more beautiful life?

6. Planning Pays During the Holidays – Both Afterglow and our sister skin care company, Exuberance Beauty, hold our largest sales of the year this Black Friday through Cyber Monday. If you need to restock or want to expand your color collection… now’s the time! Be sure to mark your calendars and check your email for the details Thanksgiving weekend!

7. Natural Beauty Hack I Love – I always get the last drop of my natural face cream out of the bottle. How? Easy. When I’m down to the last drop and can’t scrape anymore from the inside of the bottle, I add a few drops of my non-alcohol based natural toner (I use Exuberance Beauty’s Indian Rose & Aloe Calming Facial Tonic) to my almost spent bottle and give it a little shake. This allows me to easily pump out the remaining cream with a little toner twist.

Thanks for staying present! Enjoy your weekend!

Love & Light,

Kristin

Fall Saturday 7

Hey Beautiful!

Here’s my list of little treasures I’ve uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. Voting Tool I’m Using – If you often show up at the polls knowing only a fraction of the candidates and ballot measures this website’s for you! Check out Ballotpedia.org before you vote this year. Enter your address and receive a sample ballot that you can print, plus general information on each candidate on each issue, from the presidential candidates down to your local offices. Your voice should be informed and heard!

2. Quote I’m integrating – “Every choice you’ve made was not a wrongness. It’s how you got here to choose your strongness.” – Gary Douglass

3. Intention Setting Extension I’m Loving – Ah, the internet. The invention of distraction. It can be tough to stay focused on accomplishing your goals when there are so many fun things on Pinterest and Facebook. Try this free Chrome browser extension Momentum to set intention and stay on task. This extension replaces and personalizes the default image that pops up when you open a new tab. You can set your intention right on the browser image and your main to-do’s for the day.

4. Radical thought I’m having – The happier I become the more beautiful I am…both inside and out.

5. My Latest Two Blog Posts – 5 Makeup Tips for Women Over 50 and Is Kids’ Halloween Makeup Dangerous?

6. Hacking Desserts for Anti-Aging – Sugar’s at the top of the no-no list if you want to look and feel your best for years to come. Sugar is so addictive that you really need a strategy to avoid it and still feel satisfied. One of my sugar weaknesses is ice cream and my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker has given me a healthy, dairy-free, gluten-free and sugar-free alternative that I can make in minutes with three  ingredients: a can of full fat organic coconut milk, organic vanilla extract and stevia or monk fruit. Intrigued and looking for more healthy ice cream ideas? Just search for ‘vegan, sugar-free ice cream recipes’.

7. Natural beauty product I’m reaching forNot too heavy but very emollient and packed with antioxidants, especially in the winter months Evening Primrose Eye Contour Cream by Exuberance Beauty is a must.

Thanks for staying present! Enjoy your weekend!

Love & Light,

Kristin
