Is mineral makeup better than traditional makeup?

Everything in life is a choice. What choices bring you joy? It’s important to us that we offer you as much product information and ingredient transparency as possible so you can make the best decision for your body and your beauty. The Afterglow Cosmetics line of mineral makeup was specifically formulated in response to a niche group of women who wanted very natural makeup free of specific irritants found in traditional makeup. Our mineral makeup is a response and an offering to sensitive women everywhere who were not served by the traditional cosmetic industry.

We also feel that mineral makeup’s a more sustainable, eco-friendly option that supports the change that we wish to see in the world towards less environmental toxins, more bio-diversity and sustainable resource management.

Traditional makeup is often formulated with a petroleum base and relies on synthetic chemicals and intense synthetic fragrances many women find overwhelming for their system as a whole. Instead of contributing to their joy, traditional makeup becomes a point of irritation for many women. We developed the Afterglow line of mineral makeup specifically for sensitive women who’s needs and concerns weren’t being met by the traditional makeup brands. We listened to our customers’ needs for makeup that was not only natural but also free from other allergens such as gluten and soy.

How does mineral makeup apply differently?

Applying mineral makeup is very easy when you start with the right bush and a clean, well moisturized face. A kabuki brush is the ideal brush for applying mineral foundation. Begin your application once your moisturizer has completely absorbed into your skin. Simply tap a thumbnail size amount of powder in to the cap of your mineral foundation container and swirl your kabuki brush into the powder until it has been fully absorbed in the bristles. Then begin to buff your mineral foundation onto your face starting at your jawline and working inward.

Once you have applied this first layer of mineral foundation to your face, asses if you would like to build more coverage. Repeat the process until you achieve the coverage you desire. If you have specific dark areas or blemishes you would like to cover, simply dip your concealer brush directly into your mineral foundation and spot apply. Make sure to blend the edges of your concealed spot for an even application. Follow your foundation application with mineral blush, bronzer and mascara!

Is mineral makeup better for my skin?

Many would argue that mineral makeup is better for your skin. It’s especially good for you if you have many chemical sensitivities as the best mineral makeup’s quite natural and contains very few ingredients. Mineral makeup is often recommended by dermatologists post laser procedure because it is so gentle.

Mineral makeup’s ingredients also provide natural sun protection without exposure to additional synthetic chemicals. These same physical, sun blocking ingredients (Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide) are also considered anti-inflammatory and skin soothing for challenging skin conditions such as acne, eczema and rosacea.

You will notice our line is very broad and offers many different shades and undertones. I fall between two of your mineral foundation shades. Can I blend them?

Yes! You can blend any of our mineral powders together to achieve a custom shade. We also recommend you try our Infused Glow Bronzer for those times of the year you are transitioning from a lighter to deeper shade. The Infused Glow Bronzer also works well for contouring.

How long do your products last after applied?

When applied with the correct brush to a clean, well moisturized face, our products last all day. We suggest you also finish your look with our Infused Setting Powder for a more soft-focused finish. Your look should not crease, smear, or settle in lines or blemishes as traditional liquid foundations do.

Are your cosmetics non-comodegenic and hypoallergenic?

Customers who have skin issues and have had bad experiences with other cosmetics in the past LOVE our mineral makeup. They actually notice their problem skin improving with the use of our mineral foundations because the certified organic botanicals soothe inflamed skin while the minerals offer superior oil control. The likelihood of a reaction is extremely rare since our products do not contain irritating ingredients like artificial dyes & colors, nylon, PEG, Bismuth oxychloride, Talc, and perfume, which are found in almost all traditional (and some natural) cosmetic brands. We also urge our customers to clean their cosmetic brushes on a very regular basis to ensure that they are not harboring bacteria, which could contribute to a breakout.

What kind of sunscreen protection does your mineral foundation offer?

Our Infused Mineral Foundation offers physical blocking UVA/UVB at an SPF 20. We recommend that you always use an additional sunscreen before applying your makeup on your neck and décolleté (upper chest) to ensure you are well protected. Dermatologists strongly recommend you wear a high SPF during the day to reduce your risk of deadly melanoma cancers and premature aging.

Does your mineral foundation feel heavy?

Our Infused Mineral Foundation offers superior weightless coverage with a natural look and feel that is extremely light. You’ll notice the light, “barely there” feeling is one of the most common comments in our Infused Mineral Foundation reviews. This weightless application is best achieved using our Vegan Kabuki Brush. For additional spot coverage, we recommend our Vegan Concealer Brush with our Infused Aloe Concealer or our Infused Total Cover Concealer.

Do your minerals have that unnatural ‘glowy’ sheen the other “bare mineral” brands do?

Absolutely not! A few popular mineral cosmetic lines mix a chemical called Bismuth oxychloride into their products. Bismuth oxychloride leaves the products with a highly silky look and feel. Unfortunately, this chemical leaves a strange, undesirable “glowy” look to the skin. For more information about Bismuth oxychloride and why we don’t use this ingredient in our products, click here.

Does your makeup contain irritants or chemicals that may cause a reaction?

All our cosmetics are made of the highest quality, pharmaceutical grade, pure mineral and certified organic ingredients. Our cosmetics do not contain irritating ingredients like Bismuth oxychloride, Talc, cheap fillers, mineral oil, petrochemicals, synthetic humectants, artificial FD&C or Lake dyes, or Paraben preservatives that generally cause sensitive people to react to standard cosmetics. The likelihood of a reaction to our mineral cosmetics is extremely rare. We offer a 30-day, open container money-back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied for any reason. Click here for details!

I’ve tried a few other mineral brands and they made my skin itch! Why?

The majority of mineral cosmetics use the natural ingredient mentioned above, Bismuth oxychloride, in their formulas. Though natural, it is known to make the skin itch. We do not use this ingredient in any of our products to ensure we eliminate this potential reaction.

Why don’t you offer your products with one of those cosmetic brushes attached?

While novel, mineral cosmetics that come with the brush attached make it impossible to actually clean your cosmetic brush effectively. We truly believe that you must keep your cosmetic brushes clean and free of bacteria and germs that it may pick up on your bathroom counter, in a cosmetic bag, or by being dropped on the floor. We highly recommend you clean your brushes twice a month to ensure that your tools are clean. This will help keep your complexion clean and your cosmetics from being contaminated.

How long will a container of your Infused Mineral Foundation last me?

If you use our products every day, they will last you four to six months. Our Infused Mineral Foundation lasts up to six months and acts as a foundation, powder, and sunscreen, all in one.

Can I sleep in Afterglow Cosmetics?

Afterglow Cosmetics are incredibly gentle and ideal for the most sensitive skin. However, we do not recommend you sleep in any makeup, regardless of manufacturer claims.

Are your products gluten-free, soy-free and corn-free?

We are one of the few GFCO Certified Gluten-Free makeup bands. Our entire line is also soy-free and many of our product are corn-free. Each product page details exactly what the product’s certifications are and what ingredients it does not contain.

Have any of your products ever been tested on animals?

Afterglow’s products have never been and will never be tested on animals. We also do not purchase ingredients for our products that have been tested on animals. We are Leaping Bunny Approved by the The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) and PETA.

Are your products vegan?

We have a roadmap in place to reformulate all our product to be vegan by 2019. Currently, many of our mineral cosmetics are vegan. You will see a Vegan symbol on each product page that is vegan. The only animal bi-product ingredient we currently use is organic beeswax.
