The GFCO Certified Gluten-Free Difference

Certified Gluten-Free Written by Guest Contributor, Chris Rich, Vice President of Development for the Gluten Intolerance Group.

Quick question - as a gluten-free consumer, what is the first thing that you do when you pick up a new product at the grocery or drugstore?

The majority of you probably answered one of two things. First, you find the area showing the ingredients and/or components that make up the product. You are looking for those “hidden” ingredients: the malt, wheat flour extract, etc. When people think about you being gluten-free, they think you need to just avoid breads, but these ingredients are the tricky little things that you know can do the real damage.

The second thing that you are doing when holding that product in your hand is looking for the GF label. The “circle GF” label, also known as the certification label, is arguably the most trusted symbol in our gluten-free community.

Before I became involved with the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and learned more a.....

Kristin's Saturday 7

Hey Beautiful!

Here's my list of little treasures I have uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. An article worth reading & passing onto a loved one - Anti-Aging Secrets Exposed Report - Chemical Linked to Breast Cancer in Skin Care - The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a Project of the Breast Cancer Fund, recently found toxic carcinogens and endocrine disruptors in the form of PTFE (also known as Teflon) in some of the largest cosmetic brands’ skin care, gel, and powders. While The Campaign’s findings are disturbing, the report is a must read. Pass it onto your loved ones and spread the word to those that may still be seduced by ‘anti-aging’ claims.

2. Video I’m digging - The Human Experiment - This documentary does an excellent job of outlining what the thousands of untested and unregulated chemicals being used in our food, homes, and personal care items are doing to our collective health. T.....

How to Choose the Right Foundation Shade

How to Choose the Right Foundation Shade

Do you have foundation shade paralysis? You’re not alone! Nailing the perfect foundation shade can be tricky, but it all comes down to determining your undertone. The goal of a foundation is to match your natural skin tone and even out the overall appearance of your skin. Using the correct foundation shade will allow your natural skin tone to shine through. Use these quick tips to determine your perfect foundation shade by first understanding your beautiful skin’s natural undertone.

What is an ‘undertone’?

Your undertone is the underlying shade of your skin.  Undertones generally fall into four groups; Warm (yellow or golden light and medium skin tones), Cool (pink or red light and medium skin tones), Olive (medium and medium deep skin tones), and Neutral (balanced light and medium skin tones).  In fact, your undertone has nothing to do with how light or dark your skin appears. It also has nothing to do with the amount of pink or redness you see on your skin du.....

Hey Beautiful!

Here's my list of little treasures I have uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. A risk that was worth taking - Last year, what started out as a “radical thought I was having” about giving my entire Afterglow team a paid, two weeks off from December 23rd to January 6th, manifested into being with our Winter Wellness Vacation.

This company move was a leap of faith. Even with our amazing and understanding customers, our ability to continue to take, process and ship orders 24/7/365 through the magic of the internet and our trusty partners… it was still a hold-yer-breath leap of faith.  I’m so glad I took it and so grateful for my team for putting the right communication in place to make it as smooth as possible for everyone!

Self-care is so much a part of our company culture, it gives me a lot of joy to be able to offer this to my amazing team. After we returned and the dust.....

Hey Beautiful!

Here's my list of little treasures I have uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. Radical question I’m embracing - What am I holding onto that no longer serves me? What can I let go of now that will allow me to receive even more in the new year?

2. App I’m Loving - Feedly - My inbox(es) are at times overwhelming. I want to subscribe to a billion blogs and info sites, but I simply can’t add more burden to the box. Feedly is a Google App on your Chrome browser that serves as a clean, easy to read aggregator for all your news feeds, blogs, and website updates. It has really streamlined my online reading and lightened my inbox load. Try it here.

3. Quote I’m integrating - “If you think you are enlightened spend a week with your family.” - Ram Dass

4. Company that’s inspiring me -Smile Train - How can a child share their light with the world when they are born with a .....

Hey Beautiful!

Here's my list of little treasures I have uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. Radical thought I’m putting into action - Remember that “radical thought” I was pondering a few months ago related to taking some serious time off? Well, it’s happening. Check out our blog to read exactly what motivated me to give all Afterglow employees an additional, required, two paid weeks off this holiday season. I would especially love to hear your comments on the blog if you work for a company that closes at the end of the year or you own a company who has an out-of-the-box required vacation policy. How does it change your company culture? If it’s your business, why did you do it? What do you think about it? Here’s the blog post with the details > Why We’re Taking 2 Weeks Off…

2. Recent purchase I’m loving - Lyssé’s Leather (Vegan) Ponte Leggings - I am so happy with these .....

3 Vitamin Deficiencies That Severely Affect People with Celiac Disease

Young smiling woman outdoors portrait.

Living with celiac disease means far more than a life without pasta. Along with other forms of gluten intolerance, this multi-system autoimmune disorder compromises the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. If left unchecked, this can lead to vitamin deficiencies which not only cause G.I. issues, but also detract from the natural beauty of your skin, hair and nails. Let’s take a look at the common issue of vitamin deficiencies in people living with gluten intolerance, along with how these deficiencies may be impacting your appearance.

Overview of Gluten Intolerance

Being gluten intolerant means that your body is unable to digest the gluten protein found in wheat, barley and rye. This can lead to the irritation and inflammation of your small intestine, impeding its ability to absorb nutrients.

Luckily, there’s an easy fix: avoiding gluten allows nutrients to be properly absorbed. Unfortunately, many people either don’t realize the severity of the condition, while.....

Hey Beautiful!

Here's my list of little treasures I have uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. This week’s book I’m digging into - The Underground Girls of Kabul : In Search of a Hidden

2. Recent purchase I’m loving - A Functional Movement Screen with Danny Maresca.  I get pretty geeky about discovering what my body can and can’t do… and learning innovative ways to move back into balance in order to get to the next level. Pushing your body physically when it’s not in balance will inevitably do more harm than good. How do you know if you’re physically out of balance? This elegant screen makes it abundantly clear within about an hour of leg lifts, joint rotations, stretches, lunges and squats. More precise than strenuous, the Functional Movement Screen illuminated where my movements were off balance and what I needed to do to bring them back into alignment in order to prevent future .....

Hey Beautiful!

Here's my list of little treasures I have uncovered recently that are making me happy, healthy, and more beautiful inside and out this week. Enjoy!

1. This week’s adventure I’m cherishing - What started out as a short Sunday stroll through the forest with a friend turned into a very long hike. I love how moving through nature with friends can open up and deepen conversations and a meeting of hearts and minds.

2. Recent purchase I’m loving - A Jade Micro-current Facial from the lovely Joi Harrison-Turner - This facial is dubbed “The Non-Surgical Face Lift”. To prove the instant and very visible lift to non-believers, Joi first treats half of the face. I could see for myself the very noticeable lift and plump! The facial itself is super relaxing as Joi rolls her micro current, light, sound, and radio-wave technology across my skin. This technology provides stimulation to the skin and muscles, increases production of collagen and elastin, provi.....
